Sourcing for Profit -SCALE 2012


The 13th edition of SCALE has duel focus on Industries as well as the Supply Chain and Logistics opportunities in different industries.

Industry Focus
IT & BPO Industry: Sunrise sector; In 2011, generated employment over 2.5 mn, aggregated revenue over USD 88 bn. Nearly 60% workforce from Tier II, III cities; demographic shifts expected to fuel further growth.
Opportunities: Collaborative supply networks; IT in improving profitability; IT in optimizing all resources like man, machine, money and material.
Construction Sector: Investment in infrastructure sector during the Twelfth Five Year Plan estimated at INR 41,000 bn; generated around 31 million jobs.
Opportunities: Reduction of cost and time, to improve profitability through SCM; Materials and construction chain challenges, to help optimize the procurement and management operations.
Healthcare Sector: Predicted to reach USD 280 bn by 2020, contributing an expected GDP spend of 8% by 2012 from 5.5% in 2009. Indian medical technology industry expected to reach USD 14 bn by 2020 from USD 2.7 bn in 2008. India would require another 1.75 mn beds by 2025 end to achieve 2 beds/1000 population ratio.
Opportunities: Materials management; healthcare provider challenges; manufacturer /distributor challenges and how they can be effectively managed to increase profitability.
Automobile Sector: Attained turnover USD 35.8 bn, investment USD 10.9 bn; provided direct and indirect employment to 13.1 mn. Projected size in 2016 varies between USD 122 bn and USD 159 bn includes USD 35 bn in exports.
Opportunities: Multi-plant strategies for Original Equipment Manufacturers; Clustering of suppliers to be closer to regions with strong demand potential; Vendor management and improving logistics .
Retail Sector: Annual sales USD 500 bn, nearly 90% market controlled by tiny family-run shops. 25% market share, given expected growth at 2021, estimated to be over USD 250 bn/year
Opportunities: Simplification of distribution networks, including use of IT systems; shelf-centric partnership between the retailer and the manufacturer; Warehousing and logistic operations
